Why are some web addresses so much more expensive than others?
I was looking at potential names for my new shop and I noticed a huge discrepancy in how much they cost. One name is listed at a normal price while another very similar name is thousands of dollars. I don't understand how these valuations are calculated or why some "premium" names are even considered premium. It feels very arbitrary and makes it hard for a small business to get started. Does anyone have insight into how to find reasonable rates?

The premium market is definitely frustrating for those of us just trying to build something real. I found that checking domain prices gave me a much clearer picture of where I could find value without spending a fortune. Sometimes adding a small verb or a prefix can drop the price from thousands to under twenty dollars. I suggest you play around with different word combinations to see how the cost shifts in real-time.
